Marine Sniper by Charles Henderson

Berkley publ. 1986 ISBN0-425-10355-2

This is not a new book. As a matter of fact it is 15 years old. I include it because I am constantly amazed at the number of sportsman who have not heard the story of Carlos Hathcock, Marine, sniper, American.

This is the stuff of which the American legend was built, the kind of man we hold out as an example of American pride and service.

The story of Gunny Hathcock is a brutal, horrific tale of war. An average young man in a time of war asked to do the un-imaginable in the line of duty, Carlos simply did the best he could. Turns out he was damn good!

The reason I include this book in the hunting reviews is not to glorify war, a terrible business at best,. Nor is it to have everyone running off to try 2000 yard shots at deer or other game, rather to show each and every sportsman out there what CAN be done with a rifle. Again, I don’t want anyone trying shots at 1,500 yards, but 300 to 500 yards is a common yardage in hunting situations and when you finish this book you will realize that you can make these shots with the proper instruction and practice. That is the point I guess, we can all be better, we need instruction, practice and confidence. When you finish this book you WILL believe the long shot is possible!

I stress again that this is a story of WAR! Do not read this book if you are squeamish, do not allow children to read this book!
